How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I was 16 in the1978- 1983 recession and a carpentry apprenticeship came available, through out the 4 year apprenticeship I worked for several builders and completing my schooling at night.

One I remember was a man called Eddie he was in a wheel chair and his father called us up to get a price on putting a new 3 panel door opening in an old window opening, Eddie was so happy at the end of the job he sent us a very nice letter.

I love working with my hands and customer satisfaction, meeting new people, receiving new ideas and passing on my ideas and experience.

Evidence of experience, make sure the contractor is going to be around .i.e. is the contractor going to be around in case of any defect rectification, proof of licence etc.

We get asked a lot of questions and we answer all honestly. probably most popular is about costs but when we explain the product or the works they have chosen they understand.

Have your drawing complete, we have partners who can help complete these. Make sure there is good access to the work area. Avoid any changes in scope before you start your project. .

We use project pricing soft ware but I like to use the old school method of stick and brick method so you know exactly what the project is worth.

It varies on the customer, some want a fixed price and others want an hourly rate, we normally give and estimate and if the project comes in cheaper that is what we charge.

We specialize in all aspects of the building industry from new builds to fitting out a garage to make good a extra room, retaining walls to granny flats there nothing we want do.

Garry Lewis completed his apprenticeship in 1984 in Brighton Victoria, throughout his career he has adapted to many changes successfully working from Victoria to Cairns QLD. This in all Garry knows building from the cyclone regions to the up market housing.
