How did you decide to get into your line of work?

How business started  Mike quickly became so passionate that he entered the bike industry. GoldCross Cycles was Mikes training ground for 2 years in sales and mechanics. Once Mike's skills developed, he started receiving requests from friends and family for bicycle servicing at his home workshop. What started off as just a helpful hand became a real business incentive, as people were quite happy to pay Mike for his expertise. As word of mouth spread, it quickly became a job after hours. The number of return customers and referrals brought Mike a steady stream of work, which would later develop in to his own business.

Mike came to my work on time, setup his station out the back, and in around 1.5 hours he was done. The bike was looking shmick and I took it for a ride that weekend and it felt like it was on rails. All for under what the bike stores charge and I didn't have to worry about taking it there and picking it up (which comes at a cost itself - time and petrol).... -Do you do group services?- Yes. Group services for three bikes or more can be done at discounted rates at the one location. Get your riding buddies, family, or colleagues together so you can all save!  -What is your referral discount?- The Rapid Wrench Melbourne is a business that prides itself on an efficient, hi-quality service. So we want you to come back, and we want you to tell everyone you know! If they end up having ANY work done by us (and tell us who sent them) they will recieve a 10% discount off the parts and labor (for one call-out). YOU will also recieve the same 10% discount off the bill of YOUR next service. Use this offer as many times as you like.  -Do you stock parts?- Mike carries an assortment of hi-quality spare parts to all his jobs. He will stock genuine Shimano and SRAM drivetrain parts, and everything from cables to brake pads, grips, tires, pulleys, even spare nuts and bolts. He'll even have some new pedal cleats in case yours have worn out! Good thinking!  However not all parts or quality levels can be kept in the service vehicle. If you need something specific it should be arranged ahead of time where possible.  -Will you fit the parts that I bought online?- All too often consumers are getting attitude from bike stores when bike parts are bought for cheap online and off-shore, especially when the store has spent their time offering their precious sales advice. We know you love cheap online pricing, and still want quality advice. Mike will happily talk you through upgrade options, then expertly fit them for you, without the fuss and negativity!  -How long does a service take?- Approximately 60 minutes for a General Service, 1.5-2 hours for a premium service, and 2.5+ hours for a full service. A full bike build from scratch can take 3-4 hours.  -Will you build up a bike from the box for me?- Yes. Bike builds are from $50 for most bikes, up to $100 for complicated high performance bikes such as triathlon race bikes, or downhill bikes including suspension setup. The minimum time required for a general build is 30 minutes

What makes your pricing competitive?

Being mobile has its benefits- we don't have A LOT of the big expenses that bike stores do. At The Rapid Wrench Melbourne we pass those savings on to the customer, and offer you a personal, high detail service.  When using The Rapid Wrench, we at almost literally 'by-your-side' while you rest or work, so we can always consult with you before doing extra work, so there wont be hidden charges.

How do you normally charge for your service?

For payment on-site, Mike can accept Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal. Or just good old fashioned cash (correct change please). Tax receipts can either be written or emailed out to you.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Mike has worked on thousands of different bikes through his time in the industry, and owned most of the available styles too! It will be hard to find a bike too specialized.  Do we take on hi-tech race set-ups? Those jobs are the most fun! We do speciality work on both road and mountain bikes including: - Hydraulic brake bleeds - Suspension fork strip/rebuild with new seals and oil - Suspension spring rate and shim changes - Shimano Di2 set-ups, retrofits and tunes - Road and mountain tubeless tire setups - Wheel building and truing - Wheel hub conversions - Speedo and Garmin calibration

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

-Mike's industry involvement- Mike has been involved in the bike industry as his sole-work since 2005. He has worked up from large franchise retailers such as Gold Cross Cycles, to the well known rider-owned bike shops such as Bikes Direct and Pro-Motion Cycles. Mike has also worked for key wholesale bicycling distributors such as BikeSportz Imports and Sheppard Cycles. This experience has given him a wide base of knowledge both from a technical, trade and services point of view, and also the hands-on. Mike has also had the opportunity to do the SRAM Technical University here in Melbourne, to further develop his advanced mechanics skills.  Mike regularly takes part in enduro, xc, and downhill mountain bike racing. He also commutes and trains on a road bike, as well as having a regular dabble with his Echo trials bike. To top if off, bike has a profound love of motorcycles, particularly supermoto racing. He has raced mountain-bikes all over the alps of Victoria, in New Zealand, and in Canada BC. Racing is in Mikes blood, with competitive nature thrown in to his social rides, team efforts, and solo trail blazing. Although sometimes the racing lifestyle can become way too serious at times, Mike is just as happy about simply being out in nature, socializing and spreading the good bikely love.
