I have been a techie and a software geek for the last 20 years. My geekiness had taken me to new heights when I founded Boomeringo.com in 2014, an innovative financial app that helped people keep track of their cash flow. It was here that I learnt the real power of "creating something people want". It is also the place where I got to practise and experiment with my innate online marketing skills. Boomeringo has garnered much attention; in 2016, a Melbourne-based financial services company acquired it. So you might be wondering how a techie became interested in diet and nutrition! In 2009, I watched a documentary called Body of Work (it was a doco on Foxtel). After watching it, I was so captivated by its message, I went and bought the DVD set (after months and months of search). I became more and more interested in exercise physiology to the point; I decided to become a personal trainer. The bug had caught me; I went from watching videos like Pumping Iron to idolising fitness pros like Greg Plitt (RIP) to following Mr Olympia results religiously! I even went and got a complete home gym set (that is sitting in my garage, gathering dust!). Around the same time, my younger brother had just started studying to become a physiotherapist. I studied, and I got my certificate III and IV in fitness from the Australian Institute of Fitness in 2010. After graduating, I realised that there is much more to health than lifting a bunch of weights and doing a bunch of exercises. Going to the gym is not the equivalent to being healthy. What happens in the gym is only the tip of the iceberg. As they say, "abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym". I became more interested in learning about diet and nutrition and less about bicep curls! Although my fitness career took a back seat to my tech career, my passion for diet and nutrition has never diminished. After a few minor health challenges in the past, I decided to be a life long learner of diet and nutrition. I realised why they say "you are what you eat, literally"! [[Rant]] There is so much misconception out there about diet, nutrition and food. Are eggs bad for you? Is coconut oil pure poison? Should you cook with olive oil? As a consumer, there are so many unanswered questions, and I'm confused! Especially, as a father of a toddler boy, I now have the challenge to make sure he's eating healthy and develops positive eating habits. [[Rant continues]] Then we got the likes of Instagram influencers and various other social media celebrities endorsing and recommending all sorts of fad diets with no scientific backing, evidence or qualifications! This practice is not only dangerous but also creates miseducate, misguided followers![[Rant ends]]. There has never been a better time to get more and more people to listen to and embrace evidence-based advice from qualified nutrition professionals and pass it on to the next generation!
