Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

As an architect I am obliged to carry Professional Liability Insurance covering claims based on default in the provision of professional services. All acts which have the capacity to develop into a dispute need to be reported and monitored to ensure that disputes are independently settled. I have only once provided a notice of a possible dispute eventuating. An event that was avoided and no claim was lodged.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

My family has been associated with the building industry for at least three generations and I have always assumed I would follow in their footsteps. After school I work for the MInes Department for twelve month and realised that if I was to work for the rest of my productive life it should be in a field that at was ajoy rather than a necessity.

I enjoy the process of meeting and assisting all my clients. Some more difficult than other but they have all been interesting an driven by their building projects. I have had great pleasure over the years of being part of building houses and alterations to houses that result in happy families. Seeing clients achieve or exceed their expectation is the greatest reward,

What do you like most about your job?

I like everything about being an architect, it is creative and helpful to the community but most importantly it is a job I have done for many years and can continue doing for many more. Regardless of whether it is an addition to a house, a commercial project or a contribution to a team working on a major project they are all interesting and satisfying projects

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

I believe a customer can make a decision on whether an architect is right for his project by the response he receive from the architect following the explanation of his needs and expectations. One or both of the parties should realise that they can or cannot work together. A successful project is a collaboration.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Accepted Answer

Customers sometime ask about the amount of experience and architect has but more often than not the first question is about how much will it cost, even before explaining the scope of the work. The customer usually has a budget and has already allocated how much they expect to pay. If the architects initial response is more than that expectation there is little further exploration of a working relationship

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

I have been employed as well as being self employed  since 1962. I have been involved in arbitration to settle  disputes with building contractors twice since them. Other than these matters I have had only one dispute with a client that I can remember, The client did not believe I had delivered what he expected. The dispute was more than likely due to miss understanding and lack of communication. The  event has been a salutary reminder.

I have a wide range of experience with most building  types and offer competitive pricing for quality work. Iam cost and budget aware and will provide advice on the value for money of your proposals.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Accepted Answer

The most important element of understanding a new clients requirement is a face to face discussion followed by a physical inspection of the proposed site. The discussion could be by phone and the site inspection by Google but nether provide the information nor establish a working relationship between the two parties. The other important factor is timing, when the work is required to be done. Unfortunately the client rarely understands the statutory framework which controls the timing of projects

If you have a face to face discussion with an architect before you make any commitments you will receive a good deal of advice and information on prospects and procedure without cost. Information on development potential of the site particularly if it is non residential Information on the planning and building requirement of the particular Council General information on the building climate and the ranges of construction costs

I can only offer good and informed service. This may be at a higher price than competing parties may be able to offer but the customer should at least discuss the value of the purchase and question who will be the person who actually produces the goods and delivers the advice.

What makes your pricing competitive?

Accepted Answer

I am driven by service and value. I do not need to earn $100,000.00 a year but I  do need to charge an equitable rate to recompense me for the time and effort I contribute to your project.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

After discussions and seeing the site I make an assessment of the amount of work involved  and apply an hourly rate that relates to the complexity or otherwise of the project. Basically simple and straight forward project are assessed at a higher rate than more complex one as the former rely on utilising knowledge gained from past experience and the later may need more back ground information that the client should not have to pay for.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Over the years I have experience with a broad range of project types from residential to commercial building. In my early years I was involved in multi storey works and shopping centres. Later I was part of a team involve with Commercial buildings and Planning of residential and resort precincts. More recently I have  produced private school buildings. Currently in addition to undertaking additions and new residential building I provide mentoring services to other architects.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Accepted Answer

I am about as experience an architect as you can fined thats still practicing. Experience with contractual procedures and construction knowledge. In addition to which I have recently completed a post graduate diploma in Alternate Energy and Environmental Science. I document my own work in either Autocad or Vectorworks and am happy with most popular office programs. I am equipped to deal with most aspect of both the past and present building environment.
