Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

My work is covered by professional indemnity insurance, and design work is guaranteed to comply with the Building Code of Australia, and all relevant Australian standards, and carries a certification.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Building design has always been an interest to me, and my engineering experience added to this interest. My early ventures were very much involved with sensible ecological solutions (thus my website name of EcoSensible Designs), and this was naturally extended into building design aspects generally.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

There are many stories from within the years that I have been in the industry; however, my most enjoyable building design experiences were at the time of straw bale design, in which a whole community would become involved with the build.

What do you like most about your job?

My design work is flexible, and individual, and not as part of a large business, therefore I can deal with each client on a one to one basis. Working with clients in this way builds a relationship, and creates a common interest which I find very satisfying.

Clients should familiarize themselves with current building costs throughout the industry, and in particular the building costs associated with the particular area in which they propose to build, and choose a suitable service provider that meets with their expectation of cost.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Most clients wish to know costs of design, and my reply is that the design costs is based as a percentage of building costs, based on the level of service requested.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

My work is based on extensive experience in the building and construction related industry. I am registered as Chartered Professional Engineer, and RPEQ, and whilst working with a Tasmanian building design franchise, I was also a member of HIA.

My service includes building design, specifications, and other aspects relating to the design process, including structural and civil design.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

The most important aspects are a known budget limit, expectations need to be realistic, level of finish that is required, timing of the project, proposed location of the build, if the land is owned, and any site constraints that may be applicable to the siting and building style such as covenants, slope and Council regulations, flooding, bushfire aspects, boundaries and relationship to the north.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

The best approach to building is to have a good idea as to what your lifestyle requirements are at the time. A building can be designed at the outset to accommodate future modification as the need arises. Also, consider the land aspects such as slope and access to the sun, as well as bushfire regulations, as these items can add inefficiency and unnecessary cost to the project.

No special offers are available; my services are as they are. Designs take time, and I do not supply bulk designs, because each home should have it's own unique characteristics which reflect the owners individuality.

My fees are based on average fees charged throughout the industry, and as I also approach the design work through a practical engineering and functionality rationale, design and construction aspects are foremost, thus economy can be achieved.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I base fees on the average building design cost as a percentage of building cost, and engineering fees on an individual quotation basis. The fees vary in accordance with the level of service required, and overall complexity of the build, eg land forms, Council constraints, and chosen construction materials.

As a qualified and experienced civil/structural engineer, my work includes the engineering aspects of design, which brings an additional functional approach to a design.

I have been a qualified civil/structural engineer for many years, and ran a highly successful building design franchise in Tasmania and northern NSW. As well as contemporary design, my work has included involvement with alternative design work such as straw bale, rammed earth, mud brick construction. Ecological and environment sensitivity has always been a priority.
