How did you decide to get into your line of work?

After spending 3 years working for "Sunstate Landscaping" I saw the potential to bring satisfaction to customers through identifying their particular needs. I enrolled in a certificate 3 in horticulture (landscaping) and never looked back. It is exactly what i have always loved to do. Incorporating the outdoors, with new landscapes most weeks, to bringing happiness to those involved.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

A recent customer explained to me how she was feeling so overwhelmed and distraught that her garden had fallen by the wayside that she was feeling depressed. She remembered what it used to look like, though due to her age was unable to tend to it as she had before. After our team was finished fully overhauling the entire landscape Mary was absolutely thrilled and now spends more time outside than in. We get regular calls from this particular customer to thank us again and again for helping her out.

What do you like most about your job?

We love what we do as it improves the most valuable asset to any home owner, it brings people outside to enjoy nature and to sooth and satisfy our customers. Most of which happily refer us on to their friends and family. We enjoy making something beautiful where there was nothing before or rejuvenating a tired landscape to its former glory.

Are they qualified for landscaping, how long have they been doing this line of work and do they enjoy what they do. Ask to see previous photo's of completed work and speak to them face to face to see if you are happy to deal with them.

I am often asked whether i can supply my customers with brochures for them to hand out at work or to friends and family. I am also asked about botanical names for plants and what conditions they are suited to. I always advise on native plants as there are 1000's of wonderful specimens  out there and they thrive in our conditions.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Size of area to be worked on. Whether it be turf, paving, retaining walls, or even a pile of rubbish or dirt. The approximate size is always a benefit to an accurate quote.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Clean up any items that obstruct the landscape (swings, trampolines, old car parts etc.) 2. Keep access to areas readily available. 3. Try to do as much research into the works needed before engaging us. A better picture of whats required always helps to identify what the job entails.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

We are quite flexible when it comes to pricing. If the job is quite large we usually base it around an hourly rate, however smaller jobs and straight forward jobs can be a fixed quote. We generally ask for a site inspection before hand to get the best possible picture of what is required.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I would have to say out specialty would be "Rejuvenation" of overgrown gardens. Bringing life into the older, tireder, landscapes. We often work with the customer to either completely change the style to a more suitable and sustainable character or use what is still salvageable to create a serene and rustic looking natural landscape.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have been landscaping now for close to 6 years. In that time i have completed my certificate 3 in horticulture and also obtained my QLD "BSA" license. I have completed many different aspects of landscaping and now own and run my own business "Evergreen Property Maintenance"
