How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have had a green thumb ever since I was a little kid and used to garden with my gran. Both my parents are avid gardeners and have shared their love of the outdoors with me which has influenced my choice of career path.

I used to complete garden work for Disability SA and one of my customers was an elderly, disabled lady who was depressed because she was unable to physically garden any more. Through my job and her garden, I was able to bring back a sense of joy and happiness to her life.

I love a hard days work in the garden, then standing back at the end of the day and looking proudly at what I have accomplished. I enjoy applying my wealth of knowledge in a practical sense but also sharing it with my customers.

What professional skills and experience do you have in gardening and horticulture? Can you please explain this to me? (eg. what the work is, what the professional is going to do, how long it will take and how much will it cost?) A trusted professional will take the time to explain this properly.

Customers always ask me if I can complete work at a cheaper price and my response is: "What do you think your time is worth at work? If your boss asked you to do your job at a cheaper price would you say yes to them?" I request a reasonable price per hour for quality work. Nothing more.

I take pride in my work, I am honest and hard working. I believe that if you treat a customer fairly and with respect, you can create return business for yourself with a healthy business reputation. I ask to be paid what my time and expertise are worth and do not seek to be greedy or untrustworthy.

I need to see the job to find out the particulars in order to provide an accurate quote. This also means that I can help to save you time and money by providing effective or alternative suggestions that may not have been considered if I had not seen the job in person.

1. Provide accurate details of the job itself. 2. Consider any preparations needed eg. buying plants or garden care products. 3. Choose to clean up the green waste yourself after the job is complete.

I take into account cost effective strategies to see if a job can be done safer, quicker or easier in order to save time and money. I take garden waste with me (depending on the amount) or make use of the green bins onsite. When considering plants, I advise customers on what is quality for money.

How do you normally charge for your service?

$30 per hour. Cash only, to be paid at the completion of the job on the day. Prices may be negotiable depending on the job required.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Qualifications: Certificate III in Horticulture, Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety, Work Zone Traffic Management, Chainsaw Operator Ticket, and First Aid.  Experience: 3 years of experience in government and non-government gardening roles (including volunteering and community work).
