We had a very negative experience with Dream Doors Adelaide Central. From the time we paid our 50% deposit it took them 28 weeks to complete our kitchen renovation, which was considerably more than the 8 week maximum we were promised. First there were delays due to incorrect measurements, then unavailability of sub-contractors, then incorrectly built parts (apparently). Once they finally started dismantling the old cupboards and doors it took them 9 weeks to complete the reno: we were living with a dismantled/incomplete kitchen for that whole 9 weeks. Each delay came with a reason, but the length of each delay appeared disproportionate to the reason given, which made it difficult to sustain our compassion. On top of the delays, there were multiple additional expenses we had to find funds for. We were told that our old sink could be reused in the new benchtop, but it turned out it couldn’t. We were told that the new bulkheads would be tidily mated to the ceiling and wall, but it turned out we had to make good the torn plasterwork ourselves. And there were multiple mistakes in the design, where for example they supplied the wrong number of drawers, despite us reminding them of that in writing months earlier. And somehow they’d come to believe we were supplying our own door handles. Throughout this process the project manager (who was also the franchise owner) rarely contacted us. To get any information about the issues and delays we had to chase him up repeatedly, often getting no response to our emails, texts or voicemails until we pinged Dream Doors head office to complain about the poor communication. The subcontractors and Sydney head office were excellent, very helpful and professional. When we asked for a consideration for all this difficulty and delay, the franchise owner insisted that 3% was the largest discount he could offer. We only agreed to what we believe to be such a low consideration because we wanted to close out the saga. If we were doing this again with any supplier, we would insist the contract include drawn-up plans, an itemised list of what we asked for, and a termination clause that allowed us to get a full refund of our deposit if the renovation wasn’t delivered in a reasonable time.
