As a Chartered Accountant and as a Registered Tax Agent I carry $2 million in Professional Indemnity Insurance. My work is guaranteed to achieve its objectives as set out in my scope of works and/or engagement letter.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I was always good at numbers and also interested in people. There is something about what people do that always intrigues me and then there is the matter of being able to convert things into numbers to have another level of understanding. It is a dichotomy and also an interplay, people and numbers.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

About 2004 person that I did not previously know came to my office with a tax bill close to half a million dollars in a terrible state of worry and had apparently asked many people including other accountants what to do. None had a solution. This person had a very modest home and a below average income from a small business. Once I properly understood the situation I decided to take the job. I followed all the correct procedures and then did some some pretty heavy hitting into the Tax Office to get action. Without the need for lawyers I had the erroneous tax assessments reduced to nil. It took about 2 years to finalise.

What do you like most about your job?

The best thing about my role is helping others to work towards their goals and to be part of the process of bringing that to fruition. Another part I like is solving problems or contributing to solutions by adding my knowledge and experience into the mix.

As an accountant I need to get to know your financial situation and financial behaviour & personality. Therefore you must feel comfortable that I will keep your trust and that I will only act in your best interests. You need to believe that we communicate well and that I understand you and am tuned in to you needs. The best questions can be about others who have been helped in similar circumstances.

How can I pay less tax is a common question. My answers include questions like how much tax do you want to pay, how important to you is this, why is this important to you, what are you trying to achieve by paying less tax, what will you do with the money you save on tax, is the real objective to have more money, and therefore lets explore what can be done in your particular situation.

As a small business it is important to only take on work that can be delivered upon. I do have a support network of people and services that I call upon to provide additional manpower or specialist services when needed. If I am to use other people for your work then you will be informed about that well in advance. I  provide job turn around times in advance depending on your requirements.

I will take time to understand your problems and issues and I will suggest constructive solutions. you will receive clear & understandable advice. Communication will be timely and relevant.

I need to know exactly what results you want to achieve, existing problems and issues and why you have come to me. I need to know that you understand the issues and that we are on the same wavelength/have a common understanding of what we are expecting to achieve.

Saving money is important, but spending a dollar to save 50 cents is bad value, and yet many people make this simple mistake. By properly understanding a job and the outcomes that will be achieved before the job is commenced, along with a fixed price for the job you will be able to accurately assess how much money you will save every time you hire me.

For small one off matters such as a tax return or obtaining a reduction or elimination of a tax or a penalty I will provide a fixed fee up front, and you can compare that price with any in the market place.

Most consultations are free. That is because I am endeavouring to understand your problems, issues, goals and desires. Once there is a clear understanding and agreement on your objectives I will provide you with a proposal of how to achieve the objectives with options on the level of input from myself. Often I can provide direction and you can do the work, or you may wish for me to do more of the work.

Have served and helped hundreds of small businesses and individuals over the years, therefore I understand most business issues and many business sectors. A reading of the last financial and tax reports plus brief discussion will provide me with enough information to ask sensible and useful questions.
