How did you decide to get into your line of work?

My high school I.T. teacher (in the Windows 3.1 days) decided that the class syllabus may as well be the same as Microsoft's course at the time and in addition to regular school exams, the entire class could sit the MS exam at the end. I was away!

What do you like most about your job?

As unprofitable as it can be, I love the tricky hardware repairs! I also like building and deploying new hardware to customers. There is always something new to work with and lots of "Ooooo" moments.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

I.T. professionals are a varied bunch. Some have spent years studying in enterprise environments and others are self-taught. Neither are better or worse but the most common complaints I hear aren't regarding the work, they are about wether the technician LISTENED and understood the issue.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Although I do contract for a number of large IT companies, I am able to offer more services directly to clients at a cost that is usually around half (or less).

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I can usually only provide a price by the hour upfront although most issues can be quoted quite quickly after investigation which keeps customer's costs very low prior to final quote.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Many I.T. issues can be made significantly worse the longer they are allowed to run. Viruses and data recovery are 2 very good examples of this. Turn-ff your computer and get in touch if you suspect a virus, dead or dying hard drive or you have accidentally deleted something that you need back.

I keep my pricing fair and upfront to encourage my customers to share my business with their friends. This seems to work fantastically.

I charge general services by the hour (or part thereof) although I often quote a fixed price for services such as laptop repairs and data recovery before starting.

Although I work in all areas of I.T. on a daily basis, data recovery and laptop repairs form a large proportion of my work. I also focus on providing small businesses with Business-Class hosted email services.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have extensive experience. I have began Microsoft training in high school. I have worked in a variety of departments of the Government of S.A, local councils and private large businesses before opening independantly, offering those same services to small businesses and home users.
