How did you decide to get into your line of work?

After leaving school I wanted to get into a engineering type trade I could'nt find an employer except for a instrument builder/repairer and calibration technician apprenticeship I did this for just over 12 months but was not happy with the work enviroment I then did an apprenticeship in carpentry I liked the work but I still wanted to get into an engineering trade I finally found one and did my cert 3 in refrigeration.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I first meet this lady 7years ago when I first quoted on a installation of an air conditioning unit a 8kw Panasonic in the lounge room I got the job installed the unit and on completion recommended to her to get the unit sanitised and serviced once a year, 3 years went by and each year she told me its OK we dont need it done she then rang me she had to look up my number she was getting very ill the doctor told her she had an allergy to mould I carried out a full sanitise and clean and service of all the units in the house and found white , brown and black fury mould growing in the unit.

What do you like most about your job?

* I like the hands on side of my work and every job is slightly different from the last. * To see the finished job and have it running and the customer being happy. * Recieving feedback from the customer and refering me on to friends.

* What level of qualification do you hold on your ARCtick licence ( make sure it is a full refrigeration licence ) * Make sure they are a fully qualified refrigeration technician.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

* Do air conditioners require servicing the answer is yes, I then go on to say that due to the low surface temperature and constant dampness of the cooling coil while in cooling mode A/C units breed moulds and bacteria and should be sanitised and cleaned once a year as well as a mechanical servive.

I have 24 years experience in the construction industry and 20 of those years working in the commerciaI and industrial sector in that time I have also warranty repair

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

* Why me because I chose my trade and I have completed the full refrigeration certificate unlike many others who chose to be electricians but have no formal qualifications in refrigeration or understanding.

* Size of area being cooled in square metres  * High set or low set if installation upstairs then please state * Wall construction - brick or timber etc * Is installation back to back

* Have site ready with little or no moving of furniture, wall hangings or other items * Keep pipe work length to a minimum  * If unit is to be placed high on a bracket for example offer at time of quoting to help with lifting so a extra person does not have to be organised and payed for

I am a fully qualified commercial grade refrigeration technician with 24 yrs experience in the construction industry and 20 of those years directly in the refrigeration industry.

How do you normally charge for your service?

For a new installation or a replacement of an existing unit I would usually go out to check the job then give a fixed price quote. For a routine service of a air conditioning unit I also give a fixed price of $70 for one and $30 for each additional unit.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

* Replacements of old faulty air conditioning units this way I can maybe find an area of neglect in the old unit and advise the customer that these areas need better attention this time around.

Unlike most people in the air conditioning trade I don't just do installations I am a fully qualified refrigeration technician I fully understand the heat transfer cycle and the workings of the system.
