When looking for an accountant or bookkeeper, firstly ensure that the firm and/or individual has the demonstrated competencies for the task. A common mistake in small business, is engaging a bookkeeper who is not a registered BAS/tax agent.  Secondly, ensure that they are committed to - and governed by - a professional code of ethics. Membership of CPA is a good indicator, and provides an avenue of recourse if you feel the provider has breached the code.  Thirdly would be to ensure that the provider has adequate insurance. There are many situations in which you can be held personally and financially liable for the mistakes of the provider.

What we need to know before we can quote varies considerably, but typically it would involve discussion around where you are coming from, where you are now, and where you want to be.  This helps us understand any legacy concerns that may require attention, the volume and scope of work required now (and in the immediate future), as well as how to structure these activities to best support future goals.
