How did you decide to get into your line of work?

25 years ago I decided to replace some very un-appealing glass in a door in my home with a leadlight panel I designed for myself. I attending a training course, completed the panel and started getting requests from friends and acquaintances to build panels for them. The rest is history. Since then I have made hundreds of beautiful leadlight designs to the mutual satisfaction of me an my customers.

What do you like most about your job?

For me, the most important thing that provides me with satisfaction is seeing the delight of my customers when they finally get to see their completed leadlight panel. I like to involve my customers the design process, so this moment, when they see the design makes them very excited, as they take on 'ownership' of the product.

Are you familiar with and do you manufacture your leadlight according to the Australian Standard - 'Glass in Buildings (AS 1288 - 2006)'? Are you prepared to repair any defects in a completed leadlight panel?

How important are good design skills in obtaining the leadlight product I want? How long will it take to plan, manufacture and install my commission? Can I install leadlight panels myself? How can I estimate the cost of an item of leadlight? Can visits be undertaken to my home? What are the care requirements for a leadlight panel? How large can a leadlight panel be? How easy is it to repair broken glass in a panel? Do you undertake commissions for people living outside of South Australia?

Leadlight Delight can create a computer generated version of the design, adding any combination of glass colours and textures to provide you with images to consider prior to making your final choice. The design can even be superimposed into a photograph of the proposed location in your home to provide the most realistic impression of the final effect.  Leadlight Delight can loan samples of the many hundreds of types of glass available, enabling you to view them where your leadlight is to be located, providing you with the best chance of achieving the best selection possible. Designed to last generations, all items are individually and carefully crafted using the highest quality materials available. Careful attention is given to the specific requirements dictated by the location of window panels. Added structural rigidity is incorporated into designs for large panels and panels that will be subjected to repeated movement and jarring, such as door panels. All items are manufactured to meet Australian Standard - Glass in Buildings (AS 1288 - 2006).

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I need to know whether you already have a leadlight design or whether you want me to create one for you. If the latter, I need to know your initial thoughts regarding the style of design, the colours you might be considering, the location of the panel and whether it needs to complement any existing leadlight. Some indication of your budget for the job is also useful.

What makes your pricing competitive?

I am a single person business working from a studio attached to my home. This enables me to significantly minimise overhead costs, delivering savings to my customers.

How do you normally charge for your service?

While I can charge on an hourly basis, my preference is to provide fixed quotes. I believe that this is to the advantage of both me and in particular, the customer, providing assurance of final cost.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have been designing and manufacturing leadlight panels for over 25 years, continuously improving my skills. Recently the federal government has decreed that all leadlight manufactures need to be accredited, so I am currently obtaining such accreditation, mostly based on prior learning and experience.
